ABOUT THE SERIES:

The melancholic photoseries Behind Death’s Door shows the houses of recently deceased people of whom the relatives chose a specialized company to clear out their homes. I went along several times to investigate death further. When I entered a house, the dance with the movers and the possessions of the previous houseowner began. If I wanted to capture something, I had to do it right away, because in a couple of ours the entire house was emptied.
The photos are hermetic, there is no contact with the outside world, which results in an oppresive atmosphere of loneliness and nostalgia.
Trivial objects are the last remains of a passed life. Traces are being removed, a preview of the fading of memories. Eventually falling into absolute oblivion is the frightening fate of each individual. Eternity comes down to a constant movement of people who constantly die.

This work has been on display at Van Krimpen Gallery, Art Amsterdam, UNSEEN Photo Fair and is part of the collection of Museum Tot Zover, Amsterdam.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The book has 16 images and 3 poems by writer Kees ’t Hart, which he wrote for people with a ‘lonely funeral’. People who have no family and friends (anymore) to attend their last goodbye. There is a little group of writers who make a personal poem and read it at the ceremony, so that no one has to leave this world alone.
Tho book is self published, printed with 3 different shades of black ink, handmade by myself with a little help from my mother’s sewing machine.
With each book there’s a 15 x 22 cm. print of one of the most iconic pictures in the book.
Both book and print are numbered and signed.
